Behind the Print: Houseplants

Plants have a very real, positive impact on mental health and happiness, providing companionship and reminding us of the importance of being mindful, present, and appreciating the little things. That is why Printfresh founder Amy designed the newest Printfresh pajamas featuring a charming collection of common houseplants.

In 2011, Lizz Wasserman and her husband Isaac Resnikoff took a leap of faith on a plot of undeveloped land in Highland Park, LA. While this location seemed like a dream to Lizz and Issac, Lizz’s architect parents thought otherwise. However, with architect expertise from Lizz’s parents and the use of creative materials, they were able to build a completely net-zero home. The Abbott Hill House has become an inspiration for many and has been recently featured in Dwell.

I have been following my friend, Lizz Wasserman’s home building process for a while now, and am truly inspired by what she and her husband, Isaac Resnikoff have built in Highland Park, LA. Not only is the home absolutely stunning, but it is completely net-zero. From frame to finish, Lizz and Issac prioritized energy conservation, sustainability, and a limited budget to transform their home. After seeing the final results featured in Dwell, we asked Lizz to give us an inside look at their home through a tour of their houseplants. –Amy Voloshin, Founder

Many of the plants featured in this pattern are varieties that I keep in my home and office. Most are popular houseplants, and I made sure to include my favorite snake plant, fern, aloe, cacti and monstera.

Houseplants can be very fun to sketch – this pattern actually began as linear pencil drawings that I translated into vibrant stitching. The texture, details, and color variation of the leaves, basket planters and macrame hangers really lend themselves perfectly to embroidery.

Health Benefits of Houseplants

Plants can have a positive effect on mental health. Tending to them and seeing them thrive can be a relaxing activity, and some research shows that the bacteria in the soil triggers the release of serotonin. While having a full garden in the city can be a challenge, houseplants make working with plants accessible to anyone.

I personally find tending to my houseplants very relaxing. Jades and orchids are my go-to plants. At this point, I have had them over many years and feel comfortable identifying their needs. Other plants can be a little high maintenance for my busy lifestyle so I find it’s best to avoid choosing those so I don’t feel overwhelmed or burdened with too much of a project.

Leo, my husband, and business partner loves taking care of bonsai trees. It’s a total passion of his, and he spends so much time in the greenhouse working with his trees. The flowering ones are especially fun and he’s always so excited to see the flowers bloom.
